RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside France's air force in a joint strike on an underground arms cache in Syria employed by the IS group, according to the British defence ministry.

The facility, identified by intelligence, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was located in mountainous terrain just above Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a series of access tunnels leading to the facility... early reports suggest the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the strike conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed jihadist rule over large swathes of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation shows the UK's leading role, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to stamp out any resurgence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary John Healey said.

RAF aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of IS subsequent to its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank every member of British forces participating in this mission for their skill and their bravery," Healey said. "Including them were numerous British troops deployed over the holidays. This operation, to remove dangerous terrorists who endanger our safety, shows how UK forces are prepared to act, continuously, protecting the UK at home and influential overseas."

During December, the American forces conducted what it termed a "major assault" targeting IS targets in the country, following an ambush killed two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN says Daesh still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
