Trump's Woke Warning Overlooks Europe's True Danger: Economic Stagnation.

The recent US national security strategy presents a flawed assessment of Europe. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "progressive" agendas represent an grave risk to the continent's identity. However, this argument is based on a serious misreading of the situation. The actual danger confronting Europe is not cultural but economic and technological backwardness.

The Stark Economic Divide Separating the US and Europe

Statistics paint a sobering contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by 87%, compared to a mere 13.5% growth for the European Union. During this period, EU GDP per capita dropped from over three-quarters to just half of the American figure. Remarkably, even the poorest US state now boasts a higher per capita income than major EU nations like France and Italy.

Today, about 50% of the world’s 50 largest tech companies are US-based, while only four are European.

The Innovation Shortfall: The Core Question

This widening economic gap is driven by stronger productivity growth in the US, largely due to technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of world technology leadership is overwhelmingly American. In the last five decades, hundreds of American startups have scaled into companies valued at more than ten billion dollars, versus just 14 in Europe.

This gap raises a vital issue: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, what is Europe stand? Most analysts agree it is largely a contest between two involving the United States and China, with European nations entering at a clear disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Technological Lag

Several key factors explain this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a much more robust and more dynamic system for funding startups. Europe still lacks a true capital markets union, a factor that limits the growth potential of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided rules hamper Europe. A US startup can launch a service under a single regulatory framework to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a bigger population size, is divided among twenty-seven different national regimes, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward risk-taking vary greatly. In some EU nations, business failure was historically viewed with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often considered a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's long-term lack of spending in defense has weakened its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Hopefulness

Despite these challenges, one can find reasons for optimism. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have begun to propose substantial change. Notable reports on European competitiveness and the single market point to the need for sweeping changes.

Given appropriate incentives and rule changes, these assets could support much higher levels of commercial innovation.

The continent still possesses significant advantages: high-quality human capital, top-tier schools and universities, and premier research institutions. Alongside a large internal market and high savings rates, these foundations have the potential to trigger a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if the EU does not become the leader in creating cutting-edge tech, it can still significantly boost economic output by implementing and tailoring innovations from other regions.

An Inflection Point

Europe now faces a decisive moment. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, the continent's slide in innovation has been gradual. However, if it fails to take decisive action to address its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could give way to a sudden and irreversible loss of world influence.
