Area Law Enforcement
Around 50 vehicles have been marked with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Vehicles, walls and postal boxes were vandalized, occasionally with swastikas, they reported in a statement.
Police say they were alerted late on Wednesday night, when a individual discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish fluid.
The liquid had been drawn in the pattern of a Nazi symbol, they added.
Police then found many other smeared vehicles and residential walls in the surrounding area.
These symbols are banned in Germany under laws banning the public display of Nazi-era symbols.
Law enforcement say preliminary tests show the substance was probably human bodily fluid.
"At present there remains no indication as to where it came from; investigators are currently not informed of any harm in relation with the event," they stated.
Municipal representatives stated they were attempting "to solve the mystery" and have requested to the community for tips.
A senior political figure commented the vandalism rendered him without words and needed to be resolved quickly.
"This incident strikes at the core of Hanau and revives the trauma of the extremist attack half a decade ago," he wrote on social media, mentioning the death of nine individuals by a shooter aiming at people of foreign heritage in February 2020.
